Tonsils

Tonsils are two masses of lymphatic tissue found in the back of the throat. Tonsils are susceptible to enlargement (adenotonsillar hyperplasia) or infection (tonsillitis). Either of these conditions may obstruct the airway or interfere with swallowing, in which case surgery (tonsillectomy) may be required to remove them.
