Insulin injections
Priming your insulin pen
Prime insulin pens before every injection.
- Attach a new needle
- Turn the dose dial to 2 units
- Hold the pen with the needle pointing up and press the injection button to release insulin into the air.
- If you do not see insulin come out, repeat the steps above.
- If insulin does not come out after repeating the process, replace the needle and start over.
Needle and syringe use
- Use a new needle for every injection.
- Remove the pen needle immediately after each use.
- If you use a vial and syringe, use a new syringe and needle for every injection.
Injection sites
- Abdomen ( at least two finger-widths away from the belly button)
- Back of the upper arms
- Sides or tops of the thighs
- Buttocks
Pinch up the skin before injecting to help with insulin absorption and reduce discomfort.
Rotate Injection sites: To prevent scar tissue or thickened fatty tissue, which can interfere with insulin absorption, rotate your injections between 2-3 different areas.
