Neurology

    Overview

Neurology is a branch of medicine dedicated to treating disorders of the nervous system.

Neurologists at SIU Medicine are certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and each emphasizes a particular sub-specialty of neurology, allowing us as a group to maintain an overall excellence comparable to any in the nation. The care of our physicians is complemented by an excellent and highly experienced staff of nurse practitioners, nurses, and support personnel. In addition, our patients benefit from the efforts of various learners of neurology--SIU Neurology resident physicians and medical students.

In addition to general neurologic care, the Department features several comprehensive programs in Alzheimer's Disease, Epilepsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Neurorehabilitaton, Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders and Stroke. There are also many ongoing clinical trials to study new therapies for these conditions.

The neurology department at SIU Medicine is known for its innovative research in neuroscience and clinical therapeutics.

Portola: A Randomized Clinical Trial of Andexanet Alfa in Acute Intracranial Hemorrhage in Patients Receiving an Oral Factor XA Inhibitor

    Active not recruiting

ANNEXa-1 (18-513): This is a randomized, multicenter clinical trial designed to determine the efficacy and safety of andexanet compared to usual care in patients presenting with acute intracerebral hemorrhage within 6 hours of symptom onset (from the baseline scan) and within 15 hours of taking an oral FXa inhibitor (from randomization). The study will use a prospective, randomized, open-label design, as it is unfeasible to blind the Investigator to the treatment assignment given the many potential therapeutic options available under usual care treatment.

Caregiver Characteristics That May Predict When Patients With Alzheimer Disease Are Placed in Long Term Care Facilities

    Active recruiting
This research will be conducted by the SIU Memory and Aging Network (MAN), which comprises 38 sites that evaluate and treat patients with dementia throughout non-metropolitan Illinois.  AD patients and their caregivers who are living in private homes will be recruited.  Primary outcome measures will be the ratings of the caregiver’s physical status (grip strength, walking speed, and score on the Timed Up-and-Go Test11 and the rating of the caregiver’s chronic medical illness burden using the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (Geriatric).12,13  The patient and caregiver dyad is required.
