    About me

I always knew I was going to work with children.  When I started medical school, I was planning on a career in pediatrics.  I had always had an interest in behavior and how the mind worked, even in high school, so by the end of the first year, I had merged my two interests into child psychiatry.   I was president of the Psychiatry club and did my second year elective with a child psychiatrist.  After my residency in adult psychiatry, I completed my child fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center, learning from some of the great teachers in the field.  My first patient as a fellow set me on course of a passion for working with patients with developmental disabilities.  My other passions have been teaching and inpatient work, which have consumed my career thus far.  I have been privileged to serve in multiple academic settings, including the University of Colorado, George Washington University and the University of Cincinnati before returning home to Springfield and SIU School of Medicine.  I also had a two year experience at Chestnut Lodge where I met the author of “I Never Promised You A Rose Garden” and the great E. James Anthony.  While at GW, I also had the opportunity to work with the fellows from Walter Reed and experience the military approach to psychiatry.  Currently, my focus remains on teaching fellows, residents and medical students about psychiatry and developmental disabilities.  As Division Chief for Child Psychiatry, my goals are to expand the division and particularly develop more community and research opportunities and influence local and state mental health policies.
